Maha Shivaratri, a sacred festival dedicated to Lord Shiva. On this day, special prayers and rituals are performed in his honor. There are many stories associated with Lord Shiva that offer guidance for a happy and meaningful life. One such well-known story connected to Lord Shiva and Goddess Sati teaches that one should never go to someone’s home uninvited.
This story is mentioned in the Shrimad Devi Bhagavatam and other religious texts, including accounts related to the Shakti Peethas.
According to the legend, Goddess Sati was the daughter of Daksha (Daksha Prajapati). She was married to Shiva. However, Daksha was unhappy with their marriage. Later, Daksha organized a grand yajna (sacrificial ritual) in Haridwar and invited all the gods and goddesses except Shiva and Sati.
When Sati learned about the yajna through Sage Narada, she expressed her desire to attend. Lord Shiva advised her not to go, explaining that it was not appropriate to attend an event where they had not been invited. Despite his repeated warnings, Sati insisted and went to her father’s yajna.
Upon reaching the venue, Sati saw that all deities had been invited except Lord Shiva. Hurt and upset, she questioned her father about why her husband had not been invited. In response, Daksha insulted Lord Shiva. Unable to tolerate the humiliation of her husband, Sati immolated herself by jumping into the sacred fire (havan kund).
When Lord Shiva learned of Sati’s death, he was filled with immense grief and anger. On his command, Virabhadra appeared and beheaded Daksha.
